Membership
Benefits
"The SCPNT provides
many benefits to its' industrial
partners. SCPNT membership
is offered at various sponsorship
levels. A summary
of benefits and sponsorship
levels is as follows:"
1. Membership on Industry Advisory
Committee (IAC)
The
SCPNT IAC meets annually in the
fall. It is composed of participating
Senior Government representatives,
Senior and Founding Member representatives
and is chaired by the Stanford
IAC Chairman. Senior
Members are permitted one representative
in this group and Founding Members
are permitted two representatives.
The purpose of the IAC is to provide
overall policy guidance, including
the direction for major research initiatives
of the Center’s projects. F ocus
is on major projects that can leverage
the Center’s unique multi-discipline
approach to position, navigation and
time and that have high potential payoffs
for society. Projects should serve
our overall purpose: centimeter accuracy
anywhere anytime.

2. Graduate Student Research Sponsorships
The majority of Member funds are
used to seed graduate student research
projects. The projects will be selected
on an annual basis by the IAB in consultation
with the Center’s Research Directors,
nominally at the beginning of each
academic year. Sponsorships will be
named in honor of the sponsoring company.
If possible, efforts will be made to
match a Member’s suggested research
topic with a Member’s sponsorship.
The selected graduate student is
typically employed as a research assistant
by Stanford University and is usually
pursuing a Ph.D. or other advanced
degree. The Member sponsorship covers
the student's tuition and health insurance
as well as a monthly stipend. The Member
company may be asked to cover any unique
additional expenses of sponsorship,
for example for travel and accommodation.
These expenses can be covered directly
or billed through SCPNT.
It is anticipated that the sponsoring
Member will establish a mentoring type
relationship with the student receiving
the sponsorship. For example, a Member
company may arrange to host a graduate
student at the company's offices or
at one of its project sites. Such a
site visit is often an integral part
of the student's research, since the
Member company provides the fieldwork
and data necessary to motivate and
validate the student's research. Members
benefit by sharing and exploring the
application of state-of-the-art and
upcoming technologies.
Founding Members will have two Graduate
Student Sponsorships named in their
honor each academic year; Senior Members
will have two and Associate Members
will have one. Members desiring to
sponsor additional Graduate Students
Sponsorships may do so with an additional
donation of $50,000 annually plus any
unique expenses associated with the
research topic.

3. SCPNT
Visiting
Fellows Program
The Visiting Fellow Program is intended
as a unique Stanford experience for
those selected. Associate, Senior and
Founding Members are invited to send
their selected staff to work at Stanford
on topics of interest. The Center’s
faculty and students benefit from the
close association and experience of
the Visiting Fellow. Member companies
that have sent Visiting Fellows to
Stanford have found that they return
with many new skills and insights into
the application of advanced technologies.
In addition, they gain contacts and
friends at Stanford and industry that
can be an important source of support
and knowledge in the future.
A Visiting Fellow sent to SCPNT typically
becomes part of an existing research
team and is given office space with
access to all facilities of the SCPNT.
In addition, they can audit Stanford
classes and attend colloquia at no
additional charge. If a Visiting Fellow
desires to work on an individual research
project, the Center will work to match
them with an appropriate faculty member
who can guide their research.
At the Associate level, Center membership
entitles
the Company
to send
a staff
member
to work at Stanford for one month each
year. At the Senior level, Center
membership
entitles the Company to send a staff
member to work at Stanford for three
months
a year. At the Founding level, Center
membership entitles the Company to
send a staff member to work at Stanford
for nine
months a year. If possible, arrangement
may be made for the Visiting Fellow
to stay for a longer period for an
additional charge.

4. Facilitated
Recruiting
of Students
SCPNT Members will be sent resumes
of students
interested in summer or permanent work.
In addition, a Member may send a position
description to SCPNT for graduate students
to review. The Center facilitates access
to a special group of students who
may be interested in industrial employment.

5.
SCPNT
Annual
Symposium Program
A multi-day program will be offered
annually where all SCPNT members can
send representatives to obtain an in-depth
exposure to SCPNT research from the
participating faculty and students.
The program is a mixture of lectures,
workshops, Government and Industry
presentations and group participation
by attendees. There will be opportunities
for relaxation and discussions with
other attendees.
Affiliates may send one delegate
tuition-free;
Associates - 2 delegates; Senior Members
- 4 delegates and Founding Members
- no-limit on participation. Further
details and registration will be available
at this site.

6. Invitations
to annual
Project Reviews and Presentations
The SCPNT will host Project Review
Presentations of the Center’s
seeded and sponsored research on an
annual basis. All SCPNT Members and
Government sponsors will be invited
to attend. The presentations will be
a mixture of lectures and storyboard
presentations by the Center’s
faculty, staff and students. There
will be opportunities for relaxation
and discussions with other attendees.
7. Access
to Technical Reports
and PhD Theses
The web site will be periodically
updated to include Stanford’s
position, navigation and time related
Technical Reports and PhD theses published
over the past several years. Most will
be available on the website in ‘.pdf’ format.
Some older reports may only available
in printed format. A single copy of
these reports or thesis will be distributed
free of charge to all members who request
them.

8. Access
to the weekly SCPNT Seminar Series
The SCPNT hosts a weekly seminar
series. Nominally, the seminar is held
every Friday afternoon from 12:30 – 1:30
pm in Durand 450. The seminars are
a forum for the Center’s faculty,
staff and students as well as invited
outside speakers to discuss their research.
All SCPNT Members and Government sponsors
are invited to attend. The upcoming
list of speakers and topics will be
posted on the web site. Potential academic
credit for attending the seminar series
is to be considered by the University
in the future.

9.
Recognition
on printed
material and web site
Members will be formally acknowledged
and recognized for their sponsorship
of research on appropriated printed
material and on the Center’s
web site.
10. Early Exposure to the Center’s
Intellectual Property
Exciting new cutting-edge
technology will be developed by the
Center. Members will benefit by having
facilitated access to the research
activities and results through meetings,
focused workshops, collaborations and
direct dialogue with SCPNT researchers.
This early exposure will provide a
distinct advantage, alerting Members
to the Center’s invention disclosures.
IP licensing agreements will need
to be arranged with Stanford’s
Office of Technology Licensing
(OTL). Stanford’s OTL has
a long history of being actively
involved licensing technology to
industry. Many of Silicon Valley’s
successful start-up companies obtained
their technology through licensing
arrangements with Stanford’s
OTL.
